Jessyca Mathews was born in Flint, Michigan. Ms. Mathews is a 1995 graduate of Carman-Ainsworth High School . She received her B.A. from the University of Michigan-Flint in 2000, and graduated with honors as a black scholar. She also has a Masters in the Art of Teaching degree from Marygrove College . She currently is a teacher for the Carman-Ainsworth School District, and resides in Flint, Michigan. She is an English teacher for juniors and seniors, along with being the head girls varsity soccer coach at CAHS.
Jessyca was the Honorable Mention award winner of the Great American Writing Competition in 2009, in which she received a redecorated classroom for her entry. This year, Ms. Mathews was given a great honor in becoming the 2013 MANA Passion for Poetry award winner. Her work, Simply: A Collection of Poetry, awarded her a two year marking contract with MANA, along with a published book, e-book, and cash prize.
